4 Terabyte Hard Drive Draws Closer, with Significant Implications for CCTV Systems

A single hard drive with four terabytes of storage (4TB) could be a reality by 2011, thanks to a nanotechnology breakthrough by Japanese firm Hitachi.

This has very positive implications for organisations considering switching their CCTV systems to Network Video Recording (NVR). At last a drive that can store 30 days input from 4 camera inputs at real time 25 fps!!

By this time, too, there will have been significant advances in compression technology. MPEG4 Part 10 (H.264) which can produce data flow half the size of traditional MPEG4 is now standard on the latest CCTV systems. By 2011 we should me much further along the MPEG evolution path!
