Violent Crime in UK Schools Prompts Calls for More Metal Detectors

One in ten UK pupils has witnessed a violent assault at school with an offensive weapon, according to a survey out this week. Almost one in 10 children (9% or the equivalent of over 530,000 pupils) aged 8 to 15 years has witnessed a fellow pupil being attacked with a weapon since the start of the last school year in September 2006, according to new research from G4S Security Services (UK) ('G4S').

The findings come after the Government recently announced a policy change which allows teachers or security staff to search for weapons carried at school. The study by G4S reveals that 14% of 8 to 15 year olds have seen a pupil at their school carrying an offensive weapon, such as a knife or air pistol, during the past school year. This figure rises to almost a quarter (23%) amongst 12 to 15 year olds and to 28%, or the equivalent of 435,000 pupils, among males of this age group.

Meanwhile, the UK police are continuing to track down drivers of commercial vehicles who are not displaying “no smoking” signs!
