Convergence

As new technologies emerge and threats become increasingly complex and unpredictable, senior security executives recognise the need to merge security functions throughout the entire enterprise. A recent incident at a London bank in which hackers attempted to steal $400 million with the assistance of insiders physically attaching rogue “data sniffing” cables to PCs underlines this principle.

Convergence is the new buzz word in security. New security needs are blurring functional boundaries inside an organization. For example physical access control technology is now merging with network access technology, requiring physical and information security groups to integrate their strategies. The smart card is an example of a technology that is integrating once disparate parts of security, by verifying a person’s identity and tracking his or her physical location.
