US Not Ready for Attacks on Tankers, Warns GAO

The maritime oil tanker supply chain is potentially vulnerable in many places, both in the US and abroad, as borne out by several successful overseas attacks on ships and facilities, according to a new report by the US Government Accountability Office.

The report identifies three main types of threats:

1. Suicide attacks such as explosive-laden boats.

2. "Standoff" attacks with weapons launched from a distance.

3, Armed assaults.

According to the government agency, there are significant deficiencies in the maritime security of oil and oil product carrying vessels, both in the US and abroad. Even the US Coastguard admits it has insufficient resources to meet its own self imposed security standards.
