Maritime Piracy Up in 2007

ASIS International’s Security Management magazine in its January 2008 edition reports on marine piracy. Key messages in the article are:

- Somalia and Nigeria are reported to be the world’s most dangerous areas for shipping from the perspective of piracy threats. Tanzania is not far behind. The Straits of Malacca in SE Asia has seen a significant drop in incidents due to tripartite actions by Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

- There were more piracy incidents in 2007 than 2006. In the first nine months of 2007 pirates attacked almost 200 vessels worldwide. But this was half the number of ships that were attacked in 2000.

- Many of the attacks are with the purpose of hijack for ransom.

- Fire-hoses, floodlights, sirens, special acoustic devices, electrified fences and tracking devices are useful weapons in a ship’s arsenal in deterring and defending against pirates.
